Elektriraudtee announced on Friday the winner of the public procurement for buying 18 electric trains and 10 diesel trains – the Swiss enterprise Stadler, writes LETA/EPL Online. 18 electricity-powered trains produced by Stadler will cost 1.25 billion kroons; 85% of the cost will be covered by the European Union Cohesion Fund.

The diesel trains will be procured by Elektriraudtee with a 20-year financial lease contract. The annual lease on 10 diesel trains to be acquired in the first stage will be 85.2 million kroons and the transaction will be financed from the State budget. The contract leaves an option to acquire up to another 10 diesel trains for the enterprise.

The minister of economic affairs and communications Juhan Parts remarked that the new electricity-fuelled trains should be good news mostly to residents of Saue, Keila, Paldiski, Pääsküla and other settlements not far from Tallinn who will in a few years be able to commute quickly and safely. “This procurement and the new trains will be the first significant step in the past 20 years in the public transport system,” he added.

According to the contract, the new electric trains will arrive in Estonia before the end of 2013 and the new diesel trains by end of 2014 at the latest.
