North Hub Services will partially take over ground handling at Riga Airport

North Hub Services, which indirectly belongs to the president of the Latvian national airline airBaltic Bertolt Flick, will provide ground handling services at Riga International Airport, thus the state joint-stock company Riga International Airport will no longer be the monopolist in servicing passengers arriving in Riga.

The newspaper Biznes&Baltija reports that North Hub Services, established on August 25 this year, will register passengers, handle luggage and provide other services.

According to the newspaper's information, the new company will service not only airBaltic, but also other airlines, thus becoming a serious competitor to the state joint-stock company Riga International Airport in the ground handling business, writes LETA,

The owner of North Hub Services is Flick's company Baltijas Aviacijas sistemas ("Baltic Aviation Systems", BAS); the BAS representative Juris Petersons informed that North Hub Services will start active operations at the Riga International Airport as of January next year.

The airport's press secretary, Martins Langrats, admitted to the newspaper that the contract on ground handling services provision between airBaltic and Riga International Airport expires on December 31 and will not be extended.

The newspaper also reports that last year, Riga Airport served 3.7 million passengers, of which 2.3 million passengers flew airBaltic. This means that, as of the next year, the airport will lose a large share of its income.
