Shipping of rail freight in Latvia down 44.8% in first 11 months

In the first 11 months of 2020, shipping of rail freight in Latvia fell 44.8% from the same period a year ago to 21.227 million tons, writes LETA, according to the data released by the Transport Ministry.

International rail freight was down 47.4% from the first 11 months of 2019 to 19.377 million tons in January-November 2020, whereas domestic rail freight grew 18.4% to 1.85 million tons.


Transit freight accounted for 16.005 million tons of total rail freight carried in the first 11 months of the year, a decrease of 52.3% from the same months a year ago. Import freight carried by rail rose 1.8% to 3.089 million tons, and export cargo was up 8% to 283,000 tons.


Shipping of rail freight via Latvia’s ports was down 56% to 12.961 million tons, and deliveries of transit cargo declined 25.9% to 3.044 million tons.


A total of 41.492 million tons of freight were shipped by rail in Latvia in 2019, down 15.8% on year. This included 11.66 million tons of rail freight carried in the first three months of 2019.
