Riga Port reports 27.4% drop in cargo turnover for January-November

The Freeport of Riga handled 21.819 million tons of cargo in the first 11 months of the year, which is a reduction of 27.4% from the same period a year ago, informs LETA, according to information released by the port.

Bulk cargo, which dominated the port’s cargo structure in the first 11 months of this year, declined 34.4% year-on-year to 12.557 million tons. Handling of general cargo decreased 9.7% to 6.739 million tons and reloading of liquid cargo was down 26.5% to 2.523 million tons.


Containerized cargo made up 19.4% of the overall cargo turnover and reached 4.231 million tons in the first 11 months, down 5.3% from the previous year.


Coal, which accounted for the second largest share of cargo reloaded in the port, or 11.9%, decreased 72.9% year-on-year to 2.6 million tons.


Meanwhile, reloading of grain cargo in the port increased 34.5% year-on-year to 2.535 million tons in the first 11 months of 2020, making up 11.6% of total cargo turnover.


Reloading of oil products was down 28.3% on year to 2.436 million tons in the 11 months of this year, handling of timber reached 1.998 million tons, down 8% and handling of wood pellets rose 6.4% to 1.904 million tons.


As reported, the Freeport of Riga handled 32.762 million tons of cargo in 2019, which is a reduction of 10.1% from a year before.


Riga is the largest Latvian port by cargo turnover and also by the number of ship passengers.
