Latvian ports' cargo turnover decreases 29.5% in January-October

Latvian ports handled 37.298 million tons of cargo in January-October 2020, a decrease of 29.5% as compared to the same period in 2019, writes LETA, according to the Transport Ministry's data.

In the first ten months, Latvian ports mostly handled bulk cargo - 17.57 million tons, which is 41% less than in the same period last year.


This included 3.223 million tons of coal (78.5% decrease), 4.686 million tons of grain and grain products (7.1% up), 1.673 million tons of wood chips (4.8% increase), and 1.6 million tons of chemicals (20.1% decrease).


In the first ten months of 2020, Latvian ports also handled 9.734 million tons of liquid cargo, a 20.6% decrease year on year, including 9.192 million tons of oil products - 20.4% decrease.


In turn, general cargo turnover at Latvian ports in January-October amounted to 9.994 million tons, 8% less than in the corresponding period of 2019, including 3.887 million tons of container cargo (5.3% less than a year ago), 3.125 million tons of timber (11.7% less), and 2.59 million tons of roll-on/roll-off cargo (9.7% down).


Riga Port remains the leading port in Latvia with 19.816 million tons of cargo transshipped in January-October, 27.5% less than in the same period of 2019.


Ventspils Port's cargo turnover stood at 10.722 million tons, 40.8% down, while Liepaja Port's cargo turnover was 5.304 million tons - 10.5% less than in the first ten months of 2019.


Of the small Latvian ports, Skulte Port posted the largest cargo turnover, 824,000 tons, which is 3.4% less than in January-October last year. In total, Latvian small ports transshipped 1.456 million tons of cargo in the first ten months of this year, which is 6.3% less than in the same period in 2019.


In 2019, Latvian ports handled 62.379 million tons of cargo, which was by 5.7% less than in 2018.
