Cargo handled by Latvian ports down 30.1% in H1

Latvian ports handled 22.628 million tons of cargo in January-June 2020, which is 30.1 percent less than in the same period last year, writes LETA, according to the Transport Ministry's data.

In the first six months of this year, Latvian ports mostly transshipped bulk cargo – 10.51 million tons (43.2 percent less than a year ago). This included 2.129 million tons of coal (4.6 times decrease), 2.186 million tons of grain and grain products, which is a decrease of 6.4 percent, 1,162 million tons of wood chips (17.4 percent up), and 1.038 million tons chemical bulk cargo (down 10.4 percent).


Liquid cargo turnover at Latvian ports decreased 13.5 percent to 6.244 million tons. Oil products accounted for most liquid cargo handled by Latvian ports – 5.909 million tons, down 12.7 percent on year.


Handling of general cargo was down 12.1 percent on year to 5.874 million tons in the first six months of 2020.


Handling of containerized cargo decreased 6.8 percent on year to 2.286 million tons, timber cargo dropped 21 percent to 1.828 million tons and roll on/roll off cargo fell 10.7 percent to 1.515 million tons.


Riga Port was the largest Latvian port in terms of cargo turnover in the first six months of this year, handling a total of 11.843 million tons of cargo (26.7 percent decrease year on year), followed by Ventspils Port with 6.8 million tons (41.1 percent reduction) and Liepaja Port with 3.085 million tons (15.6 percent decrease).


Skulte was the leader among Latvia's small ports with cargo turnover at 491,800 tons (8 percent decrease on the first six months of 2019), followed by Mersrags Port – 215,700 tons (12.8 percent down), and Salacgriva Port – 158,200 tons (21.8 percent down).


The total cargo turnover of Latvia's small ports in January-June was 899,800 tons, a decrease of 11.8 percent on the first six months of last year.


In 2019, Latvian ports handled 62.379 million tons of cargo, which was 5.7 percent less when compared to 2018.
