Riga Port sees 25.8% drop in cargo turnover in first five months
Bulk cargo, which dominated the port’s cargo structure in
the first five months of this year, declined 29.4% y-o-y to 5.973 mln tons.
Handling of general cargo decreased 16.6% to 2.915 mln tons and reloading of
liquid cargo was down 27.1% to 1.159 tons.
Containerized cargo made up 18.9% of the overall cargo
turnover and reached 1.904 mln tons in the first five months, down 6.1 % from
the previous year.
Coal, which accounted for the second largest share of cargo
reloaded in the port or 15.4%, decreased 2.8 times y-o-y to 1.55 mln tons.
Reloading of oil products was down 28% on year to 1.135 mln
tons in the five months of this year, making up 11.3% of total cargo turnover.
Handling of wood pellets rose 14.8% to 928,400 tons and
grain cargo grew 18.3% to 804,500 tons.
As reported, the Freeport of Riga handled 32.762 mln tons of
cargo in 2019, which is a reduction of 10.1% from a year before.
Riga is the largest Latvian port by cargo turnover and also
by the number of ship passengers.
