BC, Tallinn, 02.06.2020.Print version
Altogether 167,000 passengers in Estonia used the train for transport in April 2020, which is four times less than in the same month the year before, when the number of passengers totaled 708,500, informs LETA/BNS.

Freight transport by rail decreased by more than a quarter, Statistics Estonia said.

"Due to the emergency situation and movement restrictions, the number of train passengers decreased significantly in April. Compared to March, the number of passengers decreased by as much as half, with 402,000 rail passengers registered then. There were no passengers on the international rail routes as the borders were closed," Statistics Estonia analyst Birgitta Ojamaa said in a press release.

In April, compared to the same month of 2019, freight transport by rail decreased by more than a quarter to 1.16 million tons. The decrease was mostly influenced by domestic freight transport, which decreased by 52% compared to April last year. International shipments decreased by 9% year on year.

The tonnage of freight may be reflected double, as companies may transport the same goods on both public and private rail.
