Rail freight in Latvia down 46.9% in 4 months

In the first four months of 2020, freight transportation by rail in Latvia fell 46.9% from the same period a year ago to 8.013 million tons, the data of the Transport Ministry shows., cites LETA.

International freight shipments by rail in January-April 2020 came to 7.561 million tons, a reduction of 48.5% against January-April 2019, while domestic shipments rose 12.6% on year to 452,000 tons. 


Transit freight accounted for 6.352 million tons of total rail freight carried in the first four months of the year, a decrease of 53.3% from the same months a year ago. Import freight carried by rail rose 9.4% to 1.087 million tons, and export cargo was up 50.7% to 122,000 tons.


Shipping of rail cargo via Latvia’s ports was down 54.4% to 5.44 million tons, and deliveries of transit cargo declined 45.9% to 912,000 tons.


A total of 41.492 million tons of freight were shipped by rail in Latvia in 2019, down 15.8% on year. This included 11.66 million tons of rail freight carried in the first three months of 2019.
