Cargo turnover at Riga Port fell by 25.2% in 4 months

The Freeport of Riga handled 8.233 million tons of cargo in the first four months of the year, which is a reduction of 25.2% against the same period a year ago, writes LETA, according to information released by the port.

Bulk cargo, which dominated the port’s cargo structure in the first four months of this year, declined 28.5% year-on-year to 4.952 million tons. Handling of general cargo decreased 17.4% to 2.333 million tons and reloading of liquid cargo was down 25.1% to 946,800 tons.


Coal, which accounted for the second largest share of cargo reloaded in the port or 15.5%, decreased 2.8 times year-on-year to 1.273 million tons.


Containerized cargo made up 18.5% of the overall cargo and reached 1.523 million tons in the first four months, down 6.8% from the previous year.


As reported, the Freeport of Riga handled 32.762 million tons of cargo in 2019, which is a reduction of 10.1% from a year before.


Riga is the largest Latvian port by cargo turnover and also by the number of ship passengers.
