Railway connection between Vilnius, Kaunas airports considered

BC, Vilnius, 04.12.2017.Print version
A railway connection between the international airports of Vilnius and Kaunas is considered in Lithuania in an effort to make more efficient use of the projected European-gauge railway Rail Baltica, writes LETA/BNS.

The state-run company Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LG) has already discussed the idea with Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports), which operates the country's three international airports.

"We are continuing the discussions on what we should do to make it possible for a passenger who has landed in Vilnius or Kaunas to directly board a train and go to Panevezys, Vilnius, Kaunas or any other city. In the planning of the Rail Baltica project, we should also consider airport development plans," Arenijus Jackus, director of the LG Department for Rail Baltica, said in a press release.

The Rail Baltica currently stretches from Kaunas to the Polish border and will later continue from Kaunas via Panevezys to the Latvian border, with another line going from Kaunas to the capital Vilnius.

Currently, Ollex buses is the only means of transport between Vilnius and the Kaunas airport.
