Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Kadri Simson said that Estonia should be in the leader position when it comes to the digitalization of the transport sector in Europe, informs LETA/BNS.

"The digitalization of different processes and services will bring a change to transport and Estonia could once again have a leading role in it," Simson said at a conference on digital transport held in Tallinn.

"We in Estonia are often too modest and do not tend to call our achievement's the best in the world, even though we actually have reason to do so. Blockchain technology is one such development direction of information and communications technology that could for example make the logistics sector immensely faster and more effective. This helps ensure safe data exchange and through that enables the digitalization of the rest of transport," the minister said.

Topics discussed at the two plenary sittings organized in the framework of the conference held from Wednesday to Friday included the potential and challenges of the digitalization of transport and the future of the field. Presentations were given by Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Kadri Simson, European Commission's transport commissioner Violeta Bulc, the European Commission's Director-General for mobility and transport Henrik Hololei and a number of guests from European transport institutions and companies.
