Charges to likely be brought against Estonia's Ossinovski in Latvian corruption case

BC, Riga/Tallinn, 29.06.2016.Print version
The Latvian Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) on Monday said it had asked the Prosecutor General's Office to prosecute Ugis Magonis, a former head of Latvian Railways (Latvijas Dzelzcels, LDz), for accepting a bribe of 500,000 euros, and charges have probably been also moved against Estonian railway businessman Oleg Ossinovski, informs LETA/BNS.

A statement on the KNAB's web-site says that the state official accepted a bribe in connection with a tender involving LDz's subsidiary LDz Ritosa Sastava Serviss (LDz Rolling Stock Maintenance).

The lead KNAB investigator in the case has requested that Magonis be prosecuted for large-scale graft, as well as another individual for giving the bribe to a state official with the aim of achieving a favorable decision.

KNAB is not releasing any further information regarding this matter at the moment.

Magonis's attorney Janis Rozenbergs told BNS that he is now waiting for the Prosecutor General's Office to make a decision, for which it has 10 days, on whether to bring official charges against the persons or return the files to KNAB for carrying out further investigation.

When asked if the other person against whom KNAB proposed that charges would be brought is Ossinovski, Rozenbergs said that probably yes.

KNAB suspects Magonis of accepting a bribe of 500,000 euros so that LDz subsidiary LDz Ritosa Sastava Serviss would purchase four old locomotives for several million euros from the Estonian millionaire Oleg Ossinovski's company Skinest. Ossinovski denies any corrupt practices in the sale of the locomotives.
