Vice-mayor: Brexit not to affect operations of Riga port

BC, Riga, 27.06.2016.Print version
The United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU will not affect the operations of the Riga port, Riga Vice-mayor Andris Ameriks (Honor to Serve Riga), told LETA.

He said that Latvia exported to the UK mostly timber and timber exports most probably would not be affected by Brexit.

The Riga port is multi-functional, the vice-mayor said. As the port does not specialize in handling one particular type of cargos, its operations will remain unaffected even if the situation with timber exports did change, he said.

Ameriks said it was too early to make any detailed predictions as to the likely effects of Brexit on the operations in the Riga port. Any consequences of Brexit on the European economy will show only after quite a while, he said.

He warned against exaggerating possible consequences of the British withdrawal from the EU.
