The Sefine shipyard in Turkey has launched the fourth of the new ferries under construction for TS Laevad, a subsidiary of the Estonian state-owned company Port of Tallinn that will take over operation of the routes connecting Estonia's big western islands with the mainland in the fall 2016, informs LETA/BNS.

The launch of the vessel on Friday took nearly 20 hours.

TS Laevad CEO Kaido Padar said the ferry was launched like its sister ship, the Leiger, into a floating dock, which in turn was tugged out to the sea.

The ferry has by now been equipped with all main pieces of equipment such as engines, frequency converters, pumps, air conditioners and boilers. In addition, 11,000 meters of pipes, 20,000 meters of cables and more than 8,000 square meters of insulation materials have been installed.

The new ferries are 114 meters long and can accommodate 150 cars or 12 full-size trucks. They will carry rescue equipment for 700 passengers and have seats for 500 passengers on two decks.

The ferries under construction in Turkey are scheduled for delivery in the second half of the summer of 2016 and will start serving the island routes on Oct. 1, 2016. The Tiiu will be put into service on the Rohukula-Heltermaa line connecting Hiiumaa Island with the mainland.
