Poland-Lithuania airspace block, with partners, seeks to render services to whole EU

BC, Vilnius, 04.03.2016.Print version
Lithuania’s and Poland’s air traffic control services providers Oro Navigacija and PANSA, which have created the Baltic Functional Airspace Block (Baltic FAB), a common Poland-Lithuania airspace block, have teamed up with partners from Ukraine and Spain to bid in a tender to develop a centralized system for the European Union’s (EU) air surveillance, informs LETA/BNS

The system would be used for the management of both civil and military air traffic. Unofficial sources have told BNS that the development of software alone may cost approximately 11 million euros.

The consortium SOFIAXL, which has been established for a respective tender of EUROCONTROL, includes Oro Navigacija, PANSA, Ukraine’s air traffic management company UkSatse and Spain’s air navigation equipment manufacturer Indra and its German subsidiary Avitech.

In the final stage of the tender, SOFIAXL was competing with a British consortium and the winner of the tender should be known within approximately a month, Oro Navigacija CEO, Algimantas Rascius, told BNS.

“In line with our agreement, if we win the tender, the main company will be in Lithuania and the backup company will be in Poland. Later we plan to establish a separate joint venture with the Poles, which will provide services to other countries,” he told BNS.

The tender has been issued as part of the Single European Sky initiative, which is aimed at increasing the efficiency of air traffic management and air navigation services by reducing the fragmentation of European airspace.
