Truck queues build up at Lithuania’s borders with Belarus, Russia

Queues of trucks have built up at checkpoints on Lithuania’s borders with Belarus and Russia due to a dispute on bilateral haulage permits between Russia and Poland as well as an increase in cargo flows, reports LETA/BNS.

“Talks on permits [between Poland and Russia] have been postponed indefinitely. Delegations from Poland and Russia should next week decide on the date of their meeting. Of course, those queues have built up due to the developments in relations between Russian and Polish haulers,” Erlandas Mikenas, president of Linava, the Lithuanian national road carriers’ association, told BNS.

Cargo flows usually increased after the New Year, he added.

According to the data made available by Linava, 430 trucks were waiting to cross the Lithuanian border at the Medininkai border checkpoint on Wednesday morning. Another 235 trucks were waiting at Lavoriskes, 110 trucks at Raigardas and 155 trucks at Salcininkai.

Haulage agreements between Russia and Poland as well as bilateral haulage permits expired on Feb. 1, but talks between Poland and Russia on new permits are still ongoing.

Poland was irritated by Russia’s legislation, which requires trilateral permits for the transportation of goods manufactured by a foreign company. Lithuania had to reconcile with the same Russian requirements already last year.
