After a meeting with Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov on October 2nd, Latvian Transport Minister Anrijs Matiss confirmed that Russia has not made any restriction on transit cargo through Latvia, and that the rumors expressed in the media are false, reports LETA.

Maxim Sokolov and Anrijs Matiss.

He said that the opposite is true in fact, as Riga Port is seeing an increase in cargo turnover from Russia. Matiss said that the halting of shipments of certain transit goods from Russia via Latvia is currently not on the agenda.

Matiss said that he maintains a regular dialogue with Sokolov and that this was one of their regular meetings where ''we discussed matters on how best we will move forward, and that rumors on the possible halt of cargo shipments to Latvia, expressed by some media outlets, are completely false''.

The Latvian transport minister said that they agreed to continue moving forward on various joint projects.

Concerning the question of whether the talks touched on the change of the board at Latvijas dzelzcels (Latvian Rairoad, LDz), Matiss said that the current head of the company Aivars Straksas participated in the negotiations, and Sokolov knows him. LDz will continue to cooperate with JSC Russian Railways, said Matiss. There are no changes in the course of cooperation, he added.
