Anvelt: if excise tax increase was abolished, new coalition agreement in Estonia should be compiled

BC, Tallinn, 22.04.2015.Print version
Riigikogu Social Democratic Party (SDP) faction chairman Andres Anvelt said if the planned excise tax increase, that has been met with a lot of opposition, was to be cancelled, a new coalition agreement should be compiled and such rhetoric should not be rushed, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Besides the opposition, entrepreneurs and many ordinary people, on Sunday SDP's board member Vadim Belobrovtsev criticized in public television ETV the coalition's plan raise the excise taxes and said that there is a sharp discussion on this topic in the party. He said that a lot depends on how the coalition acts after the planned protest meeting against excise tax increases this coming Sunday.

"If this demonstration is as big as it was in the case of ACTA, or the Reform Party secret financing case, it cannot be ruled out that the Reform Party itself will propose to revise the financing sources and not go ahead with the excise duty increase," said Belobrovtsev.

Anvelt said that in this case it would be necessary to create a new coalition agreement. "In this case, there should be a new coalition agreement. Because currently the revenue source is very clearly written in the agreement and if this revenue item changes, a new agreement will be made," he said.

Anvelt stressed, however, that such rhetoric should not be rushed and that the disputes are exaggerated.

Anvelt stressed the fact that the increase in excise duty was not in the program of SDP, but still got their approval. "Because we have achieved there our basic programme objectives: they concern different child and family support. This is the most important for us and symbolic."
