The Estonian police participated on April 16th 2015 in the European speed limit enforcement day for the first time and caught 160 speed limit violators, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

During 24 hours, the police inspected adherence to the speed limit in more than 300 locations around Estonia and caught 159 people violating the speed limit. A third of all of them were caught in the Harjumaa County, and most drove by 20-40 km/h faster than allowed. In addition to violations of traffic police that were registered as such, the police had a preventive conversation about traffic safety with nearly 350 drivers.

"Yesterday's speed measuring day passed without major incidents and tragic accidents. The police ascertained around 20 violations more than usual on a Thursday, and the number of violations is similar to some summer month's Friday," said Senior Commissary of the Police and Border Guard Board Riho Tänak.

"The police's aim was to draw attention to the threats related to high speed, and be on alert in places recommended by the people themselves. I thank all road users who

adhere to traffic rules, and take into account other people in traffic."

Last year, the police registered more than 42,500 cases of exceeding the allowed speed limit, which is 3 percent more than in 2013. During the past year, the police sent out almost 90,000 speed camera fine announcements, which also was significantly more compared to previous years.

Last year, 78 people were killed in traffic accidents in Estonia. Of these, 25 lost their lives due to an accident caused by inappropriate driving speed.
