The driver who clocked 162 kilometers per hour was stopped by the police on the A13 Highway while traveling to Daugavpils, as the State Police Traffic Safety Department's Chief Normunds Krapsis said in an interview with Latvian State Television today.

He also mentioned a "Ford Focus" driver who had a 2.45 alcohol level in his blood and was driving at 151 kilometers per hour. The police stopped the man, born in 1963, on the Liepaja-Talsi road.

According to initial information, most speeding violations were registered in Riga Region.

Usually the police fine 200 to 250 drivers for speeding, but yesterday the figure was 578, said Krapsis.

The police have no information about drivers who may have tried to offer a bribe to police officers yesterday so as to avoid the fine.

The pan-European 24-hour speed enforcement marathon was organized for the first time yesterday.
