Lithuania considers aid for Ukraine's railway transport

BC, Vilnius, 16.04.2015.Print version
Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania, Rimantas Sinkevicius, and Ambassador of Ukraine to Lithuania, Valery Zhovtenko, met to discuss possible assistance to Ukraine's railway sector. It would include transferring rolling stock that is no longer used by Lithuania: locomotives, electric trains and wagons, informs LETA/ELTA.

The Ukrainian ambassador transferred to the minister the letter of Andrei Pivovarsky, Ukraine's Minister of Infrastructure, in which he described the complex situation in Ukraine's railway sector.

Ukraine lacks electric commuter trains and locomotives on main railway lines. Moreover, most of its rolling stock is obsolete. Taking into consideration the critical state of the rolling stock and the lack of finances, Ukraine's Ministry of Infrastructure has asked Lithuania to transfer 1520 mm gauge rolling stock that is no longer in use.

Sinkevicius assured that Lithuania is aware of the problems and difficulties that Ukraine faces and will offer as much help as possible. According to him, Ukraine is a very important partner of Lithuania in the area of transport. Therefore, together with Lithuanian Railways the ministry will consider concrete assistance measures.
