Audit Office asks PM to take action to improve Latvian ports' management

BC, Riga, 16.04.2015.Print version
The State Audit Office in Latvia has sent a letter to Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity), pointing to serious shortcomings in the Transport Ministry's development program for Latvian ports, and urging the premier to get involved in dealing with the matter, reports LETA.

The Audit Office indicates in the letter that it has analyzed the Transport Ministry's development program for Latvian ports in 2014-2020, and concluded that the program is seriously flawed, LETA learned from the Audit Office.

In the Audit Office's opinion, the plan does not take into consideration the government's efforts in having the right to control ports. The letter indicates that the plan does not reflect the government's wish to have a single development strategy for Latvian ports. Instead, it emphasizes that the ports have the right to compete with each other and decide their operations and priorities themselves.

Likewise, the plan's chapter on ports' management does not mention the government's resolve to change the current port management structure to make it more compact and professional. The prime minister is being requested to look into the Transport Ministry's document and order the ministry to correct it.
