Automobiles worth EUR 6.98 million were stolen in Latvia in 2014. The most popular ones among car thieves were "Volkswagen", "Audi", and "Toyota", according to information provided by the car security system producer Autonams, cites LETA.

A total of 245 "Volkswagen", 122 "Audi", and 92 "Toyota" cars fell prey to thieves in Latvia in 2014. The most popular models were "Volkswagen Golf", "Volkswagen Transporter", and "Volkswagen Passat".

According to information provided by Autonams, those cars with a wide market, whose spare parts are in huge demand, are swiped most often.

The number of "Volkswagens" stolen increased by about 4% in 2014, while the number of stolen "Audi" automobiles dropped by 11%. "Toyota" was the third most popular automobile among thieves in 2014.

In total, 846 automobiles worth EUR 6,981,500 were stolen in Latvia this year.

Autonams board member Edvins Panders said that the large number of stolen low-risk cars is directly connected with insurers' low demands for security devices, as well as the owners' neglectful attitude toward vehicle theft.
