Still no agreement signed between Ryanair and Riga Airport

BC, Riga, 17.12.2014.Print version
The Irish low-fare airline Ryanair has not yet signed a new agreement with Riga International Airport and could exit Riga with the beginning of March, taking into account the airline's unusual decisions in other airports, CEO of Riga International Airport Andris Liepins said in an interview with LETA.

"The terms are clear – Ryanair knows what service agreements the airport can sign, as the Cabinet of Ministers regulates everything. We can, of course, examine the volume of services that the airline will pay for, as not everyone buys the same," Liepins explained.

It is difficult to assess Ryanair's position, as the airline's actions are rather unusual. On a technical level, the airline has demanded information on service volume and price. "I am carefully optimistic that we will find an opportunity for further cooperation. Otherwise, Wizz Air is ready to expand," Liepins said.

However, he stressed that it would be within the airport's interests to keep Ryanair.

If Ryanair fails to sign an agreement with the airport, the company will cease its flights from Riga from March 29.

As reported, Ryanair is not yet ready to sign an agreement with Riga International Airport that would be identical to that which the airport has signed with Wizz Air, but if the airport offers any kind of special discounts for Ryanair, legal proceedings could follow, the former airport's CEO Aldis Murnieks told LETA.

The agreement the airport has offered to Ryanair is exactly the same as that signed with Wizz Air. "It is important that we do not end up in a court due to some vague discount policies," Murnieks said.
