Streets and buildings in Latvian Ogre flooded as Urga River overflows

BC, Riga, 15.10.2014.Print version
Due to a strong rain, Purenu Street in Ogre City has been flooded as Urga River overflowed its banks early this morning, the State Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman Inga Vetere informed LETA.

Vetere said that firefighters have evacuated a woman from one of the inundated buildings on the flooded street. Two more persons requested evacuation. The remaining residents currently wish to remain in their houses.

Several buildings have been flooded, therefore the municipality turned to the State Fire and Rescue Service in order to address those residents who wish to be evacuated.

The State Fire and Rescue Service told LETA that rescuers surveyed the territory, while most local residents refused to be evacuated.

The Ogre City Council held a Civil Defense Committee meeting yesterday during which a decision was made to immediately begin clean-up work in Urga River.

The city council received several calls from the local residents who required help as the water level in the Urga was rapidly increasing, threatening the Parogre, Kartonfabrika, and Ogresgals neighborhoods.

Ogre City Council indicated that the Agriculture Ministry is responsible for the condition of the Urga River, however, the territory has been neglected for years. A recent report indicates that Urga River and its territory have been overgrown with trees, brushes, and water-plants, which obstruct river flow.

The municipality informed the Agriculture Ministry about this, urging it to solve the situation. The ministry replied by saying that before tackling the issue, the ministry first needs to learn the opinion of the local residents.
