Presidential advisor: Green Bridge statues in Vilnius should be removed for restoration

BC, Vilnius, 18.02.2015.Print version
Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite believes that decrepit Soviet statues of Vilnius Green Bridge should be removed and restored as they pose danger to passers by. However, their legal status would determine if they could be returned to the original place, the president's opinion was relayed by Chief Presidential Advisor on the Interior Policy Virginija Budiene, cites LETA/ELTA.

"One thing is clear, if you cross the Green Bridge you will see that its "little green men" are sick – they are rusty and cracked. In fact, they even pose danger to passers by. And what poses danger to people also poses danger to the state. These statues need to be "treated"," the presidential advisor told the radio Ziniu Radijas on Tuesday.

Budiene reminded that last year Vilnius City Municipality was authorised to remove statues for restoration. "Therefore there is medicine. () Undoubtedly, they should be removed and restored, while later everything will depend on the legal status," said Budiene.

Asked to specify whether this means that statues should not be returned to Vilnius centre, the presidential advisor said that "the head of state believes that statues should not endanger people".
