Estonian government imposes restrictions on import of goods from Crimea and Sevastopol

BC, Tallinn, 19.06.2014.Print version
The Estonian government decided on Thursday to support the restrictions on import of goods from Crimea and Sevastopol; the exception is products to which the government of Ukraine certificate has been issued, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Without this certificate, goods from those areas cannot be imported into the European Union.

At the Monday's meeting of European Union foreign ministers, it is likely that consent will be granted to various measures that form a part of the Crimean non-recognition policy.

The purpose of the restrictions is to put pressure on local companies to cooperate with the government of Ukraine. "The important message of this decision is that the European Union does not accept the annexation of the Crimea," Estonian foreign minister Urmas Paet noted.

At today's session, the government approved also restrictive measures against Sudan and South Sudan. The restrictions are necessary considering the situation there, the continuing, and, unfortunately, increasing violence, Paet noted.

The final decision on the Crimean as well as Sudanese and South Sudanese actions will be made in the European Union on Monday, at the European Union foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg.
