Lithuanian PM: municipalities should bring back emigrants by encouraging business

BC, Vilnius, 15.04.2014.Print version
Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevicius who has visited Mazeikiai noted that as businessmen and investors are lacking qualified workers, every opportunity must be used to encourage emigrants to return to Lithuania, informs LETA/ELTA.

The number of inhabitants has decreased in Lithuania, in its North-West region as well, as the surge of emigration hit during the crisis.

"On the other hand, more people are returning to Lithuania, we are satisfied with the trend of remigration. Thus, municipalities should be more active and encourage people not to settle in major cities but, instead, launch business projects in localities they left from. More ideas and information should be shared in order to enrich regional policies. I believe that most compatriots relate their future with homeland as evidenced by the growing deposits in Lithuanian commercial banks," the prime minister stated.

Labour market demand review and projections for 2014 prepared by the Lithuanian Labour Exchange were introduced at the conference-round-table discussion. It is anticipated that most jobs will be generated by companies engaged in road freight transportation, retail trade, clothing sales, construction, repairs, restoration and reconstruction.

Representatives from organisations Enterprise Lithuania and Invest Lithuania presented entrepreneurship and export promotion measures, as well as recommendations how to attract foreign investors prepared for municipalities of the North-West region.

It is the fourth forum held in Mazeikiai where ideas, proposals and experience are shared on how to reduce unemployment, encourage people to engage in business and attract investment taking into account particularities of the region. The forum was attended by heads and representatives of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists, the Lithuanian Business Confederation and the Lithuanian Business Employers' Confederation.
