Lithuania’s pork seeks alternatives to Russian market

BC, Vilnius, 09.04.2014.Print version
As Russia imposes restrictions on pork import, Lithuania is looking for potential markets for its production in the rest part of the world, informs LETA/ELTA.

In an interview with LRT radio, Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius claimed that this issue was being addressed through talks with the United States, China, some African countries, Moldova, and Scandinavian countries.

"In early September I am planning a visit to China (). We have decided to open an embassy in the Republic of South Africa. () Talks with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are taking place over one more embassy in Brazil," said Butkevicius.

In the meanwhile, the European Union has decided "to resort to the WTO's dispute settlement procedures by requesting formal consultations with Russia," it said.

In requesting consultations, the EU formally initiates a WTO dispute. Consultations give the EU and Russia the opportunity to discuss the matter and to find a satisfactory solution without resorting to litigation. If consultations do not reach a satisfactory solution within 60 days, the EU may request the WTO to set up a panel to rule on the legality of Russia's measures.

The Lithuanian prime minister said that processes in the WTO may last for more than two years.
