Two Estonians caught in Peru tried to transfer gold to Spain

Two Estonians Anne Maarja Gross (22) and Anneli Kolk (19) faced charges in Peru last week of attempt to export illegal substances; the ladies, according to Estonia’s New York consul general Sten Schwede quoted by Estonian Foreign Ministry's Press Secretary Minna-Liina Lind, accepted job to transfer gold to Spain, Estonian newspaper Postimees reported, cites LETA.

The ladies have been detained in an airport at the beginning of October.

 

Estonian ladies under preliminary investigation suspected in drug crime may only be transferred to homeland after three years in local jail, Postimees reports.

 

Currently, investigation is going on, and the chat on Facebook of the detained and the deemed orderer of the crime is under analysis, Ms Lind stated. According to her, Ms Gross and Ms Kolk are defended by an experienced lawyer and. In the morning of October 19th, Estonian time, a session was held at Cusco court where the ladies were brought charges related to possession and carriage of narcotic substance. The judge ruled that the investigation be carried out within nine months.

 

The short-time visit of the consul is communication with Peruvian ministries and other agencies to acquire first-hand knowledge on Estonian citizens arrested and punished in the country, as well as meeting the persons concerned.

 

As reported, two Estonian young women, in the age of 19 and 22, were arrested last Friday in the Cusco airport in Peru after nearly 5.6 kg of cocaine was found in their luggage.

 

The 19-year-old Anneli Kolk and 22-year-old Anne-Maarja Gross were apprehended by the police in the airport as their behaviour caught attention with nervousness. Their luggage contained 5,816 grams of cocaine. Peru police said that they intended to fly from Cusco via Lima to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

 

The Estonian foreign ministry will contact Peru authorities on Monday. The ministry's legal and consular issues deputy chancellor Lauri Bambus said that Estonia doesn’t have a diplomatic representation in Peru but will do its best to find out as much information as possible about the case and if sentenced to prison, will find out the realistic possibilities of serving these sentences in Estonia.

 

As reported, a Latvian national has been sentenced to 13-years imprisonment by the Lautoka High Court for possessing 5.6 kilograms of methamphetamines upon his arrival at Nadi International Airport in Fiji last week.
