EU vets agree on measures against African swine fever

The State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) and the European Commission (EC) in Vilnius in the 2-days-long international seminar the Application and Strengthening of Preventive Measures Aimed at Mitigating the Risk of Introduction of the Classical and African Swine Fever into the European Union organized by Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) agreed that the effective preventive and strict biosafety means were the most effective means preventing from the African swine fever, informs LETA/ELTA.

The participants of the of the working party of Chief Veterinary Officers of the Council of the European Union (EU) discussed the African swine fever situation in the region.

 

It was noted that, depending on the individual structure of the each country's economy, the observing programs had to be strengthened, the safety zones had to be fixed and the vaccination of domestic and wild pigs had to be taking place. Moreover, it was highlighted that that the international standards and restrictions were very important and that they were one of the most essential ways to prevent the country from the African swine fever.

 

All the participants of the seminar agreed that it was necessary to strengthen the cooperation.

 

Director of the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) Jonas Milius said that it was necessary to exchange the information about the spread of the illness.

 

"We cannot miss the opportunity to strengthen the cooperation of all countries. The cooperation based on the transparency and trust and the exchange of the information about the new challenges are the means that have to be used," said Milius.
