Latvia postpones State Television and State Radio merger concept

Today, the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia postponed a concept on the establishment of a new electronic public medium, informs LETA.

The government decided to forward the concept to the Justice Ministry for additional harmonization.

 

As reported, the Culture Ministry's draft decree stipulates merging Latvian State Television and Latvian State Radio, and that the merger should conclude by January 1, 2015.

 

The concept's summary says that maintenance of the new public medium will cost approximately LVL 89.2 million by 2018; investments in medium and technology platforms, building reconstruction, staff training and others is projected at approximately LVL 28.7 million.

 

The new medium is hoped to become the leading public medium in Latvia, fostering Latvian language, culture and identity, people's sense of belonging to the European and international community, development of democratic and united society. It is also hoped to reach 70% of Latvia's population on a daily basis by 2018.
