Prosecutor decides to alter charges in digital television criminal case in Latvia

Prosecutor Edvins Piliksers has decided to alter charges in the so-called digital television criminal case, LETA learned from the court.

Piliksers announced his decision during the court's session on Friday, when the court's investigation had already approached its conclusion.

 

The prosecutor decided to alter charges due to more than 110 witnesses interviewed in four years, revealing new and additional details, clarifying and adding new circumstances and materials, for example, foreign documents.

 

Taking into account that, to prepare these alterations, the prosecutor requires at least one month's time, the court announced a recess until May 29.

 

As reported, the agreement between the Digital Latvian Radio and Television Center (DLRTC) and Kempmayer envisaged the introduction of digital television in Latvia in several stages and shipping various equipment for digital broadcasts to Latvia. The total cost of the project was projected in the tens of millions of lats.

 

An investigation was launched regarding the digital television project and a criminal process was opened according to the Criminal Law's Section 317 – exceeding official authority, the Criminal Law's Section 319 – failure to act by a state official, the Criminal Law's Section 177 – fraud and the Criminal Law's Section 195 – legalizing illegally-acquired funds.
