Lithuania: stricter labeling of tobacco products may encourage smuggling in EU

BC, Vilnius, 27.12.2012.Print version
Klaipeda County Employers Association criticizes new tobacco directives adopted by the European Commission (EC). Newly approved regulations aim to impose more stringent rules of tobacco production and presentation, informs LETA/ELTA.

The directives propose to change the labeling of cigarette packs completely, i.e. all advertising marks will be removed from a cigarette pack and 75% of the space will be occupied by visual and written warnings about smoking health risks.

According to Head of Klaipeda County Employers Association Aras Mileska, such extreme restriction measures are being considered but no scientifically based evidence is provided, whether it will bring the desired effect or become an unnecessary burden on the national economy.

Lithuania's entrepreneurs do not doubt that misguided prohibitions and restrictions may bring opposite result, the increase of contraband tobacco, therefore state budget may lose millions of litas of unpaid excise and VAT.
