Mobile checkpoints may be set up anywhere in Lithuania to enforce a ban on non-essential travel between municipalities in preparation for massive checks this weekend and during the holidays, police said LETA/BNS.

"They (checkpoints) may be set up everywhere – each county decides according to its capabilities and tactics," Ramunas Matonis, a spokesman for the Police Department, told.

"Currently, random checks are done, but all (passing cars) can be stopped at some point, depending on the traffic situation," he said.

Vehicles can be stopped for checks in and outside cities and towns, the spokesman said, adding that mobile checkpoints will operate at night, too.

Over the weekend, 670 police crews will be on duty across the country, and another 250 crews will man roadblocks to be set up on entrances to cities and towns.

On weekdays days, 750 crews will be on duty and another 60 will be deployed to enforce the movement restrictions.

The roadblocks will be in place from 1 p.m. on December 18 to 9 p.m. on December 20, from 1 p.m. on December 23 to 9 p.m. on December 27, and from 1 p.m. on December 31 to 9 p.m. on January 3.
