It would be critical for Latvia's health care system if the number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients would exceed 500, said Health Minister Ilze Vinkele (For Development) after the government's extraordinary meeting today.

The minister said that Latvian hospitals currently have 250 "infection beds" available specifically for treating infections diseases. "Now they are filled," she said.

The minister said that the next step would be to double the number of these beds with some slight rearrangements. Thus, one of the criteria that could lead Latvian into the fourth or high-risk category - if 80% of hospital bed capacity has been reached for treating Covid-19 patients - would mean that there are about 450-500 Covid-19 patients in hospitals.

As reported, with 36 more people hospitalized over the past 24 hours, the number of Covid-19 patients currently receiving treatment in Latvia's hospitals has grown to 249, according to the data released by the National Health Service.

Of the hospitalized Covid-19 patients, 236 have symptoms of medium severity and 13 are suffering severe symptoms.

The total number of Covid-19 patients discharged from hospitals has reached 459 as another 22 patients were discharged in the past 24 hours.
