Estonian Prime Minister and leader of the Center Party Juri Ratas, Finance Minister and leader of the Estonian Conservative People's Party (EKRE) Martin Helme and leader of the Isamaa party Helir-Valdor Seeder made a joint statement on Thursday according to which the referendum on the definition of marriage is planned to be held in spring 2021 reported LETA/BNS.

"The referendum on the definition of marriage as other national issue is planned to be held in the spring of 2021 based on principles listed in the joint statement and in accordance with the valid laws and Constitutional values of the Republic of Estonia," the party leaders said.

"The referendum can only be carried out while simultaneously searching for common ground -- peacefully and without provoking any social groups. We will not allow for anyone's dignity to be undermined or for anyone to be attacked. The government coalition is unequivocally against incitement to hatred. We want to place the focus of the campaign on substantial arguments and principles stemming from worldviews while avoiding any offensive and threatening rhetoric and behavior. Calling for respect to different opinions, we invite politicians from both the opposition and the coalition as well as the media and various interest groups to acknowledge their responsibility and hold these debates with dignity," they said.
