Russia could ban flower imports from Latvia, Lithuania and several other EU countries

BC, Riga, 28.07.2015.Print version
The Russian food safety supervising authority "Rosselkhoznadzor" could ban import of flowers and other plant products from several European Union (EU) member states, including Latvia, according to a source at "Rosselkhoznadzor", cites INTERFAX/LETA.

The ban could be imposed on Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. This due to the fact that phytosanitary services of these countries issue certificates for flowers that are grown in the Netherlands, and thus do not guarantee safety of flowers exported to Russia.

Flowers that are transported from other countries, including Latin America, are shipped through the Netherlands.

"As far as we know, the Dutch have practically stopped certifying their flowers," the source told agency Interfax.

As a result, these flowers are certified by Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, Lithuania, and Latvia.

"Rosselkhoznadzor" is preparing to send notices to the relevant authorities of the said countries in order to inform them about the potential ban in case they keep providing certificates for Dutch plants.
