Estonian dairy producers are ready to sell 25% of their cheese production in Japan, Estonian Dairy Union Board chairman Janus Murakas said, while accompanying Estonian Foreign Trade and Entrepreneurship Minister Anne Sulling during the latter's visit in Japan, reports LETA, referring to the ministry's press department.

Sulling said that Estonia is close to the possibility of selling part of the cheese production to the Japanese market. "The Marubeni Corporation, through which the Estonian dairy industrialists hope to reach the Japanese market, values highly the Estonian dairy industry quality and sees great potential here. During the visit to Japan, several big steps forward have been taken, and now only the details have to be agreed upon still," said Anne Sulling.

Estonian Dairy Union and E-Piim company board chairman Jaanus Murakas has visited several Marubeni customers in Japan and given an overview of the Estonian dairy market. "To start business in Japan, a lot of groundwork has to be done, which we have for the last five months worked on very actively. During the visit to Japan, we have reached agreements to send sample shipments of cheese to Japan," said Murakas. "Estonian manufacturers are ready to sell up to 25% of their cheese production to Japan, currently quantities and prices are being specified," he added.

Minister Anne Sulling said that the Estonian Dairy Union members have since the beginning cooperated very well in the Japanese direction and take into account the specific characteristics of the Japanese market. "Going to the Japanese market may take several years, but thanks to our good cooperation with the Marubeni corporation, Estonian dairy industrialists have had the opportunity to move forward much faster with negotiations, in a few months, they have reached quite close to transactions," said Sulling.

Both Sulling and Murakas pointed out that if agreements are reached with Japanese companies, Estonia has found a long-term and loyal partner.
