Saeima committee conceptually approves proposal to suspend issuing of temporary residence permits to Russians

BC, Riga, 22.10.2014.Print version
Saeima's Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee in Latvia decided today to approve in principle before the first reading All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK's (VL-TB/LNNK) proposal to suspend issuing of temporary residence permits to Russian citizens for the purchase of real estate in Latvia, informs LETA.

During the committee meeting, MP Edmunds Demiters (Reform Party) and the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Evika Silina proposed to confer the Cabinet of Ministers with the right to make decisions in regard to possible restrictions on issuing of temporary residence permits. MP Dzintars Rasnacs (VL-TB/LNNK) indicated that such a proposal was already put forward by VL-TB/LNNK before, however, the progress of the proposal was hindered due to various reasons.

Committee Chairman Ainars Latkovskis (Unity) urged the Ministry of Interior to draw up specific proposals for the second reading to confer the Cabinet of Ministers' with the right to decide on restrictions in general, instead of restrictions on specific countries.

MP Lolita Cigane (Unity) previously told LETA that the government could be granted authority to stipulate restrictions on temporary residence permits. This proposal could be included in the current draft, thus, discarding VL-TB/LNNK's initial motion.
