State of emergency declared in Latvian Ogre

BC, Riga, 16.10.2014.Print version
Yesterday, the central Latvia city of Ogre officially declared a state of emergency due to flooding caused by heavy rains, informs LETA.

Right now, as the Urga River is out of its banks, the situation is being described as "neither better nor worse."

The main focus at this time is assisting residents should they need to be evacuated. Crews have already helped a number of people leave Purenu Street, after the municipality received their distress calls.

Rescuers evacuated from the flooded area seven people, including an 8-year-old girl.

During the day, the situation in the flood zone has not worsened, but there is no improvement. Rescuers walked on a flooded area 120 houses, offering assistance to local residents.

For pumping water in Ogre experts "BaltFlood Combat" were called.

People stay in their homes, food is delivered.

Yesterday in Ogre municipality held a meeting of the Commission on civil defense, where it was decided to immediately begin clearing the river Urga.

The river is managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, and it has not been cleaned for many years. The river banks are overgrown, the channel is clogged, what complicates the flow of water.
