Lithuania continues its commitments to Afghanistan

BC, Vilnius, 20.08.2014.Print version
On 18 August Lithuanian officers deployed to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) rotated after a year-long tour of duty which also extends Lithuania's participation in the mission for another year, the Ministry of National Defence informs.

The Lithuanian representative will carry out service at the UNAMA Kandahar Regional Office in the province of Kandahar, south of Afghanistan. The major of the Lithuanian Armed Forces is incorporated into the UNAMA Military Advisory Unit and will not be involved in combat actions.

UNAMA was established in 2002 under the Resolution of the United Nations Security Council to coordinate the efforts of international community to stabilise the security situation in Afghanistan, to sustain the cooperation with provincial authorities, and to strengthen Afghanistan's national security institutions.

As NATO is gradually reducing its troops deployed to Afghanistan under the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), UNAMA is taking up an increasing role in supporting the democratic reforms in Afghanistan and the efforts of ensuring security.

Currently there are roughly 100 Lithuanian troops deployed with ISAF in the country: the Special Operations Forces Squadron in southern Afghanistan, the Lithuanian-led Air Mentoring Team training pilots of local security forces at International Kandahar Airport, military personnel deployed to the NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan at Mazar-e-Sharif, the Protection Team of the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan deployed in Kabul, and the officers deployed to NATO operational headquarters in Kabul and Herat. The National Support Element based in Kandahar is ensuring logistic support to the Lithuanian military deployed in Afghanistan.
