Former Estonian finance minister accused of economic crime

The North Estonian district prosecutor's office accuses former Estonian finance minister Mart Opmann of abuse of trust and causing the insolvency of a company, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

In addition to Opmann (57), a Jürgen Vester (47) faces the court, being accused of abuse of trust, causing insolvency of a company and embezzlement and violating booking obligations.

 

According to the indictment, Jürgen Vester, council member of AS Premium Motors Grupp that is by now bankrupt, caused in 2007-2010 a total of 2.855 million euros of damages for the company, of which 1.628 million together with the company's board member Mart Opmann.

 

Opmann, who has the education of economic cybernetics from the Tartu University, was MP and finance minister in 1995-1999 in the 2nd and 3rd governments of Prime Minister Tiit Vähi and in the government of Mart Siimann.

 

Opmann has been a Coalition Party and People's Union member.

 

The Harju county court holds a preliminary hearing in the case on Thursday.
