Kubilius: authorities should not assume responsibility for the offences of their subordinates in free time

The Lithuanians should realise that driving under influence is a conscious preparation for a crime, thus, there is no difference whether it is done by a builder, police officer or a representative of any other profession, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius says.

"It is very important to pool efforts to reach more results compared to what has been done in the recent years to educate the whole society more effectively. Since driving under influence is a conscious preparation to commit a crime. This education is still not enough for Lithuania. Because I do not see any difference as to who kills a man on the road – either a policeman, who has taken some drinks while off-duty, or a builder, or any other person of some profession," the prime minister told the Ziniu Radijas on Thursday.

The head of Government also noted that the highest authorities should not assume absolute responsibility constantly for the offences of their subordinates in their free time, informs LETA/ELTA.

"The number of deaths from alcoholism in Lithuania is still significantly above the EU average. We should take the quantities of alcohol consumed by Lithuanians into account, the traditions, and we must first overcome this trouble, the consequences of which are that there are still drunken people, including police officers, who drive under influence," explained Kubilius.
