Results of vote re-count at three Riga polling stations have not impacted election results

BC, Riga, 18.09.2020.Print version
The re-count of votes at three Riga polling stations has not affected the preliminary composition of the newly elected Riga City Council, the representative of the Central Election Commission Laura Zaharova confirmed to LETA.

Consequently, neither the distribution of the seats obtained by the parties in the Riga City Council nor the deputies elected in the local government have changed.

The re-count of votes at three polling stations in Riga confirm that the mistakes made at the polling stations were not in malice, such an opinion was expressed this morning to Latvian Radio by Juris Kokins, the head of the Riga Election Commission.

According to Kokins, the vote of each voter is important, so it was only logical that the votes in the unstamped envelopes were included in the election results.

Kokins is ready to be judged on his responsibility for mistakes, but some of them have been "objectively programmed", ie mistakes have occurred because politicians have rapidly introduced various innovations in the electoral regulation.

The decision on the date of convening the first meeting of the new Riga City Council has not been made yet, but it is expected to take place sometime after September 29.
