State of emergency in Latvia will end on June 9

BC, Riga, 04.06.2020.Print version
The state of emergency in Latvia will end of June 9, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) said at an extraordinary Cabinet meeting today, cites LETA.

As he opened the government sitting, the prime minister indicated that the first bill in the package of Covid-19-related legislation has been given 'high urgency' status, which is necessary to avoid extending the state of emergency beyond June 9.

"That means we will be able to exit the state of emergency as planned [on June 9]," the prime minister said.

Latvia entered the state of emergency over the Covid-19 pandemic on March 13.

Today, Saeima passed in the first reading a draft law on the prevention and overcoming of the national security threat caused by the spread of Covid-19 and its consequences. The draft legislation provides a legal regulation for support measures after the state of emergency.

Since the bill has been given the  'high urgency' status, Saeima will pass it in two readings instead of three.
