Businessman Gulam Gulami detained in Latvia

The State Police on May 12th detained businessman Gulam Gulami, Latvian Television reported today, cites LETA.

On Wednesday, a court ruled to remand Gulami in custody. 


Representatives of the State Police told LETA without identifying the person in question, that the Riga criminal police have been conducting a criminal probe into large-scale or organized fraud, falsification of a document or seal, as well as for an illegal destruction or opening of a postal consignment. 


The crime investigated in the case has been committed over a prolonged period of time - from 2013 until 2020. 


On May 12, one person, who has been assigned the status of suspect, was detained in connection with the investigation. On Wednesday, the court left the person under arrest as a measure of security. The detained person can be released on bail. 


According to information available from LETA Archive, in 2018 a district court in Riga sentenced Gulami to eight years in jail in a criminal case over the disappearance of a Tajik cotton freight worth more than EUR 9 million. This sentence has been appealed though. 


Gulami has also been involved in a legal dispute over the Hotel Grand Palace.
