Rinkevics commended the long-standing cooperation between the Michigan National Guard and the Armed Forces of Latvia, as well as support for Latvia offered by Michigan's elected representatives. "We are pleased to welcome regular visits to Latvia by members of the U.S. Congress. I would like to thank former U.S. Senator from Michigan, Karl Levin, for his contribution and support during the time when Latvia was occupied and later, when we had regained our independence," said the Minister.

The Foreign Minister noted that Latvia was interested in expanding contacts with Michigan beyond the ongoing excellent cooperation in the military sector. To reinforce partnership between Latvia and Michigan, the Minister invited Michigan's municipal authorities to consider building closer cooperation with cities, towns and local authorities in Latvia, thereby also promoting contacts in business and innovations.

"Latvia is interested in a closer cooperation with Michigan's companies in research and development of new technologies, especially in the areas of bioeconomy, biomedicine, smart materials and energy," said Rinkevics.

The Latvian Foreign Minister also drew the Governor's attention to the active Latvian community in Michigan, which provides a connection between that U.S. state and Latvia. "I hope that the Latvian community and the Latvian Honorary Consul in Detroit, Andris Lacis, will help further enhance our links," Rinkevics underlined.
