Latvian customs officers seize 1.14 mln illegal cigarettes on Belarus border

Latvian customs officers prevented 1.135 mln cigarettes from being smuggled from Belarus into Latvia last week, LETA was told at the State Revenue Service.

While carrying out customs checks at the Daugavpils station’s customs checkpoint last Friday, March 17, officers of the State Revenue Service discovered 1.1 million Premjer cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps hidden in rail cars with a saw dust cargo.


On the same day, another 12,000 illegal cigarettes of the NZ and Minsk brands with Belarusian excise stamps were seized from a train that had arrived from Belarus at the Indra customs checkpoint. The cigarettes had been hidden in the structures supporting the tank cars.


While analyzing the scans of a freight train that had arrived from Belarus on March 19, customs officers found 23,200 Premjer cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps in train cars carrying coal.


The above smuggling cases have been forwarded to the Customs Police who will decide on taking criminal action.
